Duel swords vs great swords

I been practicing lancing fo a few weeks now and I noticed whenever I lance two or more people longsword...I want to know why longsword users continue their spirit combo WHEN THEY ARE ONLY HITTING MY SHIELD! I also found longswords trip me alot and stop
